DIET FOR ADD, ADHD AND HYPERACTIVITY CHILDREN
The following recommendations attempt to improve the physical & emotional health of your child.

DIET

  1. The first recommendation is by far the most important. Drink lots of water, as the brain consists of about 80% water. Distilled or filtered water is the best, as tap water has a high percentage of chlorine & fluoride, as well as waste metals. No fizzy cool drinks, no alcohol, no coffee, no sports drinks- just water.
  2. Some children have problems with cow’s milk. Rice milk, goat’s milk or almond milk are  alternatives.
  3. Fruit juice should be 40% juice 60% water, as the sugar content of pure fruit juice is far too high.
  4. Drinking sugar concentrate, even from real fruit, is like pouring jet fuel into your car. We’re not built to handle it, especially as a baby.
  5. These children should be on a vitamin & mineral supplement. The B vitamins are of utmost importance as is iron, as it is needed for memory & motor functions. Have the child tested before and after a course of iron treatment.
  6. Avoid refined sugars. These children should have very little if any sugar in their diets, particularly if they are hyperactive, as this aggravates the situation. Avoid fake sugars too, as many of these contain sugar alcohols like manatol or sorbitol.
  7. Avoid white foods, refined flours, white rice, white/sweet potato & other forms of pure starch. This is another form of jet fuel that our bodies aren’t equipped to handle. Children do better eating whole grains. The fibre is important, it regulates digestion, so the nutrients don’t pour into their systems all at once.
  8. No breakfast cereals & milk, as these are full of carbohydrates & sugar. This is the worst combination for an ADHD child. Instead, eggs & some sort of breakfast meat with toast is a better option. Other options are oats porridge or weetbix spread with butter & eaten as a snack.
Other meals for the day should contain a protein, one carbohydrate & two vegetables,  preferably green vegetables. They should also eat lots of fresh fruit for fibre & natural sugars.
  9. Try to avoid food additives. The hyperactive child improves significantly when the additives are removed from their diets. These additives have neurotoxic effects on such children. Some brands have fewer chemicals than others; read the labels carefully & buy the better brands. Since ingredients can be deceiving, it helps to check nutrition facts.
  10. No junk foods or foods from fast food outlets.
  11. No processed meat & MSG. If the meat has any form of chemicals in it – don’t buy it.
  12. Cut out fried foods- rather grill or bake. Steamed vegetables are preferable to boiled, but better still, eat them raw.
  13. Fish should be fresh fish instead of canned or processed. Not more than one tin of tuna per week.
EXERCISE
  1. Exercise every day – jumping on a trampoline or jumping castle or skipping. This form of exercise releases endorphins.
  2. Walking on a balance beam- a co-ordination exercise.
  3. An occupational therapist or physiotherapist will have more advice with regard to other exercises.
  4. Eye exercises daily.
    1. Have a tennis ball extended from the roof & let their eyes follow the ball as you swing it to & fro.
    2. Write sentences on the wall or on paper which they must read without moving the head, just letting the eyes follow the sentences.
    3. Take a pen & move it towards the child, back & forth without them focusing on anything else.
    4. An ophthalmologist or optician could recommend other eye exercises.
    5. Make flash cards of various pictures & show them to the children in certain sequences. Then ask child to recall what they have seen.

LIFESTYLE

  1. After bath time, take a soft brush & brush the child down gently, using baby oil or cream & brush away from the heart. This helps to desensitize the skin.
  2. Avoid heavy metal exposure wherever possible. Make sure their dental hygiene is such that they can avoid having fillings or braces. Dental fillings contain  mercury, copper & braces are made of nickel. These metals are extremely toxic.
  3. Don’t smoke around these children, as the cadmium from cigarette smoke is also
very toxic and causes accelerated loss of zinc.
SCHOOL WORK
  1. If they experience difficulty completing tasks – break tasks up into small steps & define what needs to be done before a task is considered to be complete – e.g. the task is only complete when questions 1 to 10 have been answered.
  2. If the child takes hours to complete a short task, try another method of writing e.g. typing assignment on computer.
  3. If the child often tries to opt out of a task saying that they can’t do it – allow opportunities to show his/her strengths, positively re-enforce & teach child to do self questioning & self monitoring.
